If your cat starts licking your windows, you might have a problem. That problem is condensation, which can occur on the inside of your windows when it gets cold outside. This may not seem like a big issue, but that frost or condensation can start to drip when water accumulates and can lead to problems, including permanent damage to flooring and window sills as well as water stains.
How Condensation Forms
When it’s cold outside people heat the inside of their home to keep warm and stay comfortable. That warm air holds moisture better than cool air, and when it comes in contact with a cold surface, such as a window, the water molecules begin to settle. They then group together, forming visible condensation. This condensation is similar to a cloud, as the moisture is pulled down by gravity into water droplets.
Three Products That Can Stop Window Condensation
- Window
Film Kit
– Using 100% see-through film on the inside of your windows blocks
humid indoor air from reaching the cold glass. An added bonus is that it keeps
your home warmer and using it may make you eligible for a tax credit.
- Room
Dehumidifier
– Place this near the windows that are giving you trouble and
it will remove moisture so it won’t attach to your windows. Electric units are
often quiet and energy-efficient, and non-electric options can be used in
smaller spaces like a bathroom.
- Rain-X
Glass Anti-Fog
– Commonly used to stop bathroom mirrors and car windows
from fogging up, this product can be wiped onto glass window surfaces as well.
Other Ways to Remove Moisture from Your Home
If you don’t want to go out and buy something to help with
your indoor window condensation, there are a few other options you can try.
Disrupting the warm and moist air by opening up a door or window can be an easy
fix. If it’s too cold outside you can opt to turn on the fan on your HVAC
system for a while.
There are other ways to remove humidity and moisture from your home besides getting a humidifier. Some simple things you can try include:
- Get rid of houseplants, which contribute to
humidity
- Be sure dryer vents are sealed well and all the
air goes outdoors
- Do not hang or dry laundry indoors
- Cover up aquariums and fish tanks to reduce
humidity from escaping
- Have your gutters and drains inspected to ensure
they are diverting water away from your home’s foundation
- Seal basement floors and walls with concrete sealer
or paint to keep moisture out and raise relative humidity
The best solution may in fact be having new double or dual-glazed windows installed in your home. Storm windows on the outside of your home can also help keep the inside of your windows warm so condensation won’t form.
