Washington residents know when it rains, it pours in the Northwest. With record rainfalls sweeping through Washington and Oregon, homeowners must be on the lookout for damage caused by the excess of water and moisture. While many do an excellent job of keeping an eye out for pipe leaks, slab leaks, water damage and other more obvious household problems, they may not realize their roof could be suffering the most from damage caused by excessive moisture. In such humid and precipitous areas as Spokane, homeowners may need to check their roofs often for signs of moss or algae growth, or else pay big for an unsalvageable roof.
How Do Moss and Algae Harm My Roof?
Algae growth is often mistaken for mold or mildew because of
its color. When roofs are constantly damp, algae growth is encouraged, creating
dark streaking on the shingles. Moss, on the other hand, is a plant that
receives the water it needs through its leaves and thrives in moist regions
with little direct sunlight. Both moss and algae spores are carried by animals
or wind, allowing one moss- or algae-covered roof to spread to an entire
neighborhood.
In addition to negatively impacting your home’s appearance, algae and moss growth can damage your roof’s shingles and functionality. When covered in algae, reflective roofs, which are intended to reflect heat and light away from the home, keeping it cooler overall, may suffer a dramatic decrease in performance. Moss growth can lift shingles from the roof, causing curling, and making the roof’s shingles susceptible to breakage or removal during storms or high winds. Curled shingles also fail to drain water properly, allowing moisture to seep into the roof and creating a perfect environment for water damage and mold.
How Can I Prevent the Growth of Moss and Algae?
If you’ve noticed your roof is cultivating colonies of moss
and algae, the first step to take is to clean your roof as thoroughly as
possible. Use a brush or broom to gently and carefully scrub away the moss
already clinging to your shingles. Once the largest sections of moss or algae
have been removed, kill off the rest by spraying a solution of one part laundry
bleach, one part water all along the roof and allow it to sit for about 20
minutes. This solution prevents further growth, and rains will wash away the
dead moss or algae. Avoid using a pressure washer to remove stubborn growths as
the jet could severely damage the shingles.
Discourage algae and moss growth on your roof by removing any sunlight obstructions such as trees or branches, keeping your roof free of debris and using a leaf blower to dry and blow away moisture or debris. You may also choose to invest in zinc or copper striped shingles which discourage algae and moss growth.
