Winter has arrived but it’s not too late to make your home energy efficient. Here are some useful tips that will keep heating bills low and you feeling cozy in your home all winter long.
Winter Energy Efficiency Tips
Apply Caulk and Weather Strip Doorways – Cold drafts that seep through your home’s foundation, doors, walls and window can cause your heating bills to skyrocket. Seal cracks with caulk and add weather stripping in doorways and windows to keep cold drafts from entering your home and warm air from escaping.
Insulate Your Attic, Walls and Flooring – Insulation retains heat inside your home, keeping floors, walls and your attic thoroughly heated while preventing cold air from entering. A thoroughly insulated structure will keep your entire home warm, ensuring your furnace or heater isn’t working harder than necessary to maintain a comfortable temperature, reducing energy costs.
Inspect Your
Furnace
– If you have a furnace make sure it’s functioning properly. Have
an HVAC professional inspect all its parts before the season. Also, monitor its
heating performance as the season progresses and note if it’s diminishing in heat
output. If so it might need its filter replaced.
Seal Your
Fireplace
– When not in use, make sure the damper on your fireplace is
tightly closed to prevent cold drafts from coming down your chimney.
Seal Outlets – Cold air has a habit of finding its way into your home through any crack or opening; electrical outlets for example can let in cool air. Seal off electrical outlets that aren’t in use with plastic safety inserts.
Reverse Your Fans – Turning on ceiling fans during winter seems counter intuitive, but reversing their spin cycle can cause warm air to be drawn up into your fan’s blades and dispersed throughout the room, warming it much faster, enhancing your comfort and decreasing energy bills.
