Underlying Problems With Roofs

It’s not always easy to spot problems affecting roofs below the surface, as they’re high off the ground, difficult to access through attics and the problems are often hidden underneath roof shingles or within their materials. Here are some common roofing problems to expect and look for.
Common Roofing Problems
Fascia
– Fascia is a term
for the roof’s trim, and it is typically made of wooden boards or sheet metal
that runs horizontally and is situated vertically under a roof edge. Fascia
acts as a protective layer between the edge of the roof and elements like rain.
However, prolonged exposure to moisture can rot or damage your fascia and your
roof.
Soffit
– Soffits are
located on the exposed surface beneath the overhanging section of a roof or eave.
They play important roles in ventilating attics and prevent rot in sheathing
and rafters. However, soffits can easily become cracked, rot or develop holes,
which draw the attention of birds, insects and other smaller animals that like
to build nests in them.
Flashings
– Flashing
components are specifically designed to cover perimeters, walls, valleys,
drains, penetrations or other areas devoid of covering to prevent water from
entering your home through vulnerable voids in the roof. However, flashing is
made of aluminum or galvanized steel, which is vulnerable to weathering and
oxidization. They can also become loose because of this.
Shingles
– The tiered
design of shingles make them great for protecting your home from water but are
prone to discoloration and curling. Missing shingles make the underlying wood
susceptible to moisture, which causes rotting, holes and other damages.
Discoloration often indicates a leak, while curling is a sign of inadequate
ventilation, improperly installed fasteners or high nails.
Gutters – Gutters are designed to filter water off and away from your roof, but they can easily be cluttered by debris such as leaves and twigs. Excess weight from debris can also cause gutters to collapse under their weight, especially if water is backed up and left standing in the gutter track. This can also destroy or damage your roof’s fascia.
